Causes of Missing Snowmelt Following Drought

چکیده
Water management in snowy mountainous regions hinges on forecasting snowmelt runoff. However, droughts are altering snowpack-runoff relationships with ongoing debate about the driving mechanisms. For example, 2021 California, less than half of predicted streamflow arrived. Mechanisms proposed for this “missing” included changes evapotranspiration (ET), rainfall, and subsurface moisture conditions. Here, we demonstrate that ET drought years generates dry conditions reduce runoff subsequent years. A model including legacy depleted storage reduced median error forecasts from 60% to 20% at 15 minimally disturbed basins 18% 2% 6 water supply Sierra Nevada (basins range area 5 23,051 km2 mean annual precipitation 814 1,549 mm). Our findings indicate relationship between snowpack will evolve as plant ecosystems respond climate change alter dynamics.

Contrasting Effects of Extreme Drought and Snowmelt Patterns on Mountain Plants along an Elevation Gradient
Despite the evidence that increased frequency and magnitude of extreme climate events (ECE) considerably affect plant performance, there is still a lack of knowledge about how these events affect mountain plant biodiversity and mountain ecosystem functioning. Here, we assessed the short-term (one vegetation period) effects of simulated ECEs [extreme drought (DR), advanced and delayed snowmelt (...

Plant communities in the European Alps are assumed to be highly affected by climate change, as the temperature rise in this region is above the global average. It is predicted that higher temperatures will lead to advanced snowmelt dates and that the number of extreme weather events will increase. The aims of this study were to determine the impacts of extreme climatic events on flower phenolog...
متن کاملNorth American Drought: Reconstructions, Causes, and Consequences
Severe drought is the greatest recurring natural disaster to strike North America. A remarkable network of centuries-long annual tree-ring chronologies has now allowed for the reconstruction of past drought over North America covering the past 1,000 or more years in most regions. These reconstructions reveal the occurrence of past “megadroughts” of unprecedented severity and duration, ones t...
متن کاملSpatial statistics of snowmelt
The physical processes that govern meltwater flow through snow are complex and spatially variable. Remote sensing studies may be a cost-effective approach for studying these variations, and may help to scale the knowledge obtained from field-scale observations and experiments. This paper focuses on the analysis of spatial variability of reflectance obtained from infrared photographs of a snow s...
